Big Sky Wines Grüner Veltliner 2018

Martinborough | $30

This is one of our favorite varieties, and not yet that well known in New Zealand.  The variety comes from Austria.  Genetically it is related to Pinot Noir and to Riesling.  And we think it suits Te Muna really well.
We make this in steel to let the fruit shine through, with a very slow, very cool ferment to enhance the aromatics, and then some time on lees with plenty of gentle stirring to add complexity and texture.  The result is a luscious dry white wine, with pear drop and white nectarine characters, and a gentle spiciness. Big Sky Wines – Tasting Notes

Big Sky

Martinborough

We are a small, family-owned vineyard, making limited production hand-crafted Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Grüner Veltliner and Rosé from our low-cropping single block vineyard in Te Muna, Martinborough. For us, fine wine is all about place. And people. That’s what gives wines personality and soul.

Our philosophy is simple. Make the best wines we can, not the most wine we can. That means being hands on, and only as big as we can be with us involved at every step.

Our goal is wines that are a true expression of place. We do that best by being very attentive in the vineyard, and a light touch in the winery.

And since terroir is at the heart of our wines, we look after the environment. We live there. With our family. Why would we want to mess it up? So at Big Sky we practice certified sustainable viticulture, and are committed to using organic principles when we can.
