Ata Rangi Célèbre 2016

Martinborough | $45

This 2016 release is right on form, with the warmer than average temperatures delivering excellent conditions to fully ripen these later-maturing varieties. Notably, it’s also the 30th year of Célèbre from our almost four decades on the land. The original Cabernet-Merlot dominant blend has evolved to predominantly Merlot-Syrah with touches of Cabernet Sauvignon, Franc and Malbec contributing both complexity and structure.
The nose is bright and intense with sweet red fruit and hints of cassis.

Aromatics are tempered with notes of fennel and coriander seed, the palate unfolding with flavours of ripe red fruits and fresh blackcurrant.  There is great concentration at the core and a suppleness thanks to the fine, ripe tannins.

We recommend time in bottle to see this wine at its peak.

 REVIEW:

A blend of merlot (51%), syrah (28%), cabernet sauvignon (10%), malbec (7%) and cabernet franc (4%). Dense, flavoursome and vibrant red with ripe dark berry and plum flavours plus a seasoning of oak, spice and subtle dried herb flavours. A backbone of fine, ripe tannins suggests ageing potential.

Ata Rangi

Martinborough

Ata Rangi, meaning “dawn sky” or “new beginning” is a small New Zealand winery with a renowned reputation for Pinot Noir. The winery and vineyards are owned and managed by a family trio – Clive Paton, his wife Phyll and his sister Alison. Clive planted his first vines on a small, stony sheep paddock at the edge of the Martinborough village in 1980 as one of a handful of people who pioneered winegrowing in the area.
