Alexia Wairarapa Fleeting Glimpse Pinot Noir 2019

Greytown Wairarapa | $37

“I’m always chasing you, Pinot. Elusive, tricky, there for a moment – then just a shadow. You’re out of reach, but that’s the point. Who wants easy?”

Something I’ve been working towards with all my wines, but particularly Pinot is focusing on fruit tannin and texture, pulling back on the oak and replacing it with more whole bunches, more solids and working to find the right balance for the grapes the vintage has given me. An early season frost resulted in a much smaller fruit set, but lovely flavours.

50% whole bunch to provide a taut line of tannin, and aged 10 months with 25% new oak. This is such a Wairarapa pinot – not bombastic, but earthy, savoury and seductive.

Cranberry, rainy forest, spice, contrary.

Alexia Tasting Notes

“Vibrant, varietal, youthful, fruity and engaging bouquet with aromas of dark cherries and old black currant jam, dark roses and soft brown baking spice layers, some toasty wood clove then vanilla. On the palate – dry, firm textured and fruity. Flavours reflect the nose with berries and wood, there’s tension too from the acidity and firm tannins. The core of fruit kicks back in again after a time. A wine best left to mature for some months to allow the harmonies and final true voice of the wine to be realised. Best drinking from late 2021 or early 2022 through 2025+.”

Alexia

Greytown Wairarapa

Alexia represents the strength and beauty of the matriarchy of my family, particularly my mother, the biggest influence in my life. These understated women established our family values, drove us forward, and held us together through the big, beautiful, fragile messiness of life.

I want my wines to always capture the energy, kindness and love of these inspirational women.

Within a strong matriarchy, family members know there are values that must be lived up to in order to respect what has gone before.

This is why only the best wines will ever make it into an Alexia bottle.” Jane Cooper – Winemaker
